It is the odor of oil which is the black gold of Kazakhstan. It is the odor of the bleak nature of the Western part of Kazakhstan, the salty breeze of the Caspian Sea, hydrocarbons. The aromas of salt marsh, sand, peat, and arid soil of the near-desert with its sparse vegetation contrast to the anthropogenic odors of oil, heating oil, and engine oil.
